Cyril E. King Airport (STT) in St. Thomas is
the closest major airport to Jost Van Dyke. It is a 24-hour, fully equipped
airport facility. It contains 11 gates and a substantial number of airline
carriers offer direct service to St. Thomas.
Once you get to St. Thomas, water transportation is the only method of
reaching Jost Van Dyke. Inter-Island runs boats to Jost from Red Hook on St.
Thomas, about 25 minutes by cab from the airport. You’ll go through BVI Customs
Another option is to reach Jost from St. Thomas by way of Tortola. Native
Sun and Smith’s have boats from Charlotte Amalie (closer to the airport) to
either Road Town or West End on Tortola. Then you can get to Jost via New
Horizon’s boats from West End.
Inter-Island’s 3/13 schedule says that boats go to Jost by way of St. John twice
every day except Thursday at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. (except 4 p.m. on Sunday). The
trip takes about 1 hr. 15 mins., plus the 30-45 minutes needed for the cab ride
from the airport to Red Hook. Returning to St. Thomas from Jost, figure in some
extra time for everyone on the boat to go through U.S. Customs on St. John
before continuing to Red Hook.
If ferry service isn’t available to meet your schedules, Dolphin Shuttle
operates a water taxi among the islands. Reach them at 340-774-2628 or via www.dolphinshuttle.com.
Be sure to call to confirm the latest
ferry schedules, as travelers report significant variances from the schedules
found on the Web. For example, for a two-week period in March of 2013, Inter-Island’s
morning ferries left Jost Van Dyke a good 10 or 15 minutes ahead of the widely published
time of 9:15. Contact information for the various ferry companies can be found
The ferry services dock in Great Harbor of Jost Van Dyke – a small,
very friendly community with a few inns, restaurants and bars, including the
famous Foxy’s. White Bay, with its own beach and destination drinking spots,
can be reached with a 30-minute walk over the hill from Great Harbor, or a quick
taxi ride. Little Harbor is a somewhat longer walk in the opposite direction.
