Interaction with guests
We find that guests prefer to let themselves into the cottage, but are happy to put in a personal appearance to welcome you if preferred. We live about 20-minutes drive from Barnfield so are far enough away for you to enjoy having the place to yourselves, but near enough to be on hand if required. Our housekeeper lives in the village so one of us usually calls around at some point during your stay to ensure that you are enjoying your holiday and offer 'insider tips' on places to go /things to do, secret beaches etc (if required!).

About the neighbourhood
North Devon is a haven for lovers of idyllic countryside, moorland and fabulous sandy beaches. It's a superb family-friendly destination with lots of fascinating attractions within an easy drive of the cottage appealing to all ages. There are gorgeous walks down flower-filled country lanes and ancient bridle paths right from the front door. The village has an excellent village shop selling locally baked bread, pies and pasties. It's located on the village green which has a children's playground and a Millennium woodland walk. The nearest pubs are about a 10-minute drive - and both worth visiting - The Black Venus in Challacombe on Exmoor and The New Inn in Goodleigh. There is a sports club in the village with a good bar. Visitors welcome
Getting around
Being a village on the edges of Exmoor, a car is highly recommended for getting around. However, there is an hourly bus service during the main part of the day that runs through the village to Barnstaple in one direction and to Lynton/Lynmouth in the other. IT's a great way to fully appreciate the rural views as you sit higher than Devon's famously high hedgerows. From Barnstaple, there are good bus services that run along the coast roads to and from Bideford, Woolacombe, Croyde, Westward Ho! and Ilfracombe. There is a great cycle hire shop at Barnstaple railway Station for bike rides along The Tarka Trail - a 30mile long estuary cycle path.
