Whether for a week end, a midweek break, a week, or for a longer stay, Fontainebleau is very lively town conveniently located for a cultural 'heritage' stay -the château, the picturesque villages around which include Barbizon, Milly la Forêt and Moret sur Loing- , or a sporting one : the forest is full of world-famous spots for bouldering, but it is also ideal for hiking, leisurely walks or bike rides, and you can even canoe on the Seine or on the Loing rivers. Paris is only 40 minutes away by train (one every half hour) from the Fontainebleau-Avon railway station which can be reached by bus. The Vaux le Vicomte or Courances 'châteaux' can be visited on day trips too and even the nearer Loire chateaux or Burgundy - less than a 2 hour-drive (but you need a car, one can be rented in town)More
