The natural surroundings and beautiful wildlife make this a wonderfully peaceful retreat. This unique island offers year-round spectacular bird-watching, the winter and spring migrations being particularly special. In winter, you can expect to see some 1500+ brents landing within metres of the house. The drive across the causeway offers the keen photographer ideal opportunities for close-ups of the waders and geese. In the spring, we are very lucky to have huge numbers of avocets, redshanks, oyster catchers and lapwing arriving to claim their nesting sites. Horsey is the perfect place to summer with children offering them total freedom to swim, canoe, bug-hunt, go crabbing or just relax! Arthur Ransome - well known for his “Swallows and Amazons” series of novels, set one of the books from this series - “Secret Water” - here on this island. The beautiful shingle beach is located to the north of the island, offering stunning views out across the Walton Backwaters. The 19th century newly refurbished cottage is welcoming, light and airy. It has 2 spacious double bedrooms, and one twin bedroom upstairs. The bathroom with separate bath and shower is also located upstairs. Downstairs there is a lovely well-equipped kitchen and spacious dining room, a cosy sitting room with a wood-burning stove, and a very useful boot room. Access to the island is by a tidal causeway which is suitable for all but the smallest of cars, due to good ground clearance being necessary. The crossing is a very bumpy two-thirds of a mile on what is essentially a track, but very much worth the journey once you arrive. The tide allows you 4 hours of low water crossings, tide timetables will be provided. Alternatively, why not moor up your boat and reach us that way?More

We have just returned home after staying on Horsey Island for a few days. The Island is beautiful and very peaceful, lots of birds and wildlife. Island Cottage is lovely, warm and cosy. It is perfect for a couple or a family. Vicky and Joe were very welcoming. We hope to return one day.

Horsey island is such a special place. The land is expansive and beautiful. The cottage itself is warm, cosy and so lovely for a few days stay, even longer we would have still been comfortable. Its spacious, had everything you need and even with no mains electrics we never had any problems with power, of course being somewhat Conservative. It's full with games and dvds which we utilised at it was particularly cold and wet when we went but even that couldn't dampen our few days on the island. The crossing of the water is not a problem at all. We ended up doing both crossings in the dark and could perfectly see the track. Vicky husband did offer to guide us offer shoukd we have wished. Vicky herself was so lovely, from when we first booked to the day we left she was super helpful. She took time out of her super busy day to repeatedly email me with replies about a present for my mums bday, she took us all to help feed the lambs in the morning, a real highlight of our trip, and she drove us on the quad bike to the other side of the island. She really went above and beyond. Horsey is amazing and we would love to return one day for another private island trip, thankyou Vicky 😊 🐴 🐑 🙏🏼 ♥

We had a three-night stay on the island and with high expectations is didn't disappoint! The cottage is beautiful with everything you need and the island is fantastic to explore. Our two boys and dog enjoyed taking in all the sights and getting very muddy! Joe and Vicky are fantastic hosts, helping with our kayak that got stuck in the low tide mud and friendly dogs that kept our one busy too! We left the island with a slight sadness to be going back to normality but will be booking to come back as soon as we can!

We (Jean, Gordon and grown up daughter Katherine) had a fabulous three nights on the island for Dad’s 70th. You definitely need to take your time crossing the causeway but it was such an adventure. Dad is a big Swallows and Amazons fan and my parents stay in the other cottage mentioned in Secret waters every year so now he has stayed in both! The cottage is incredibly well stocked and cosy. Willow (my 10 month old golden retriever puppy) thought the island was fabulous fun and thoroughly enjoyed bird watching, sniffing the horses and listening to the sheep! But her absolute favourite thing was Mimi the sausage dog, she has whined for her since coming back onto the main land and has requested a sausage friend for her birthday 🤪. Vicky was amazing and even gave us beautiful eggs to enjoy. The opportunity to go out on the kayaks to see the birds and seals was truly special. I would thoroughly recommend if you are outdoors people and want somewhere truly unique to go to.

Our family group of 5 plus Peggy the dog had the most wonderful of times here. The crossing across the wade at low tide in our convoy was a drive we shall never forget, with the birds calling, the estuary sea bed all round us and the light just on the turn. The cottage was perfect for us- spacious and light, comfortable , and beautifully prepared with fresh flowers to greet us. The complete tranquillity is hard to describe. We walked around the island's beautiful coastline on both days, bird watched, photographed and canoed with seals bobbing and diving close by. Vicky and Joe were so generous and friendly to our family and knowing they were close by in their farmhouse if needed was all the company we needed. Thank you for a wonderful holiday like no other!

Our first weekend on Horsey Island, booked by my daughter Carrie. We live about 2 miles, as the crow flies, from this place and can see it when we walk the dogs on the beach - but as we crossed the causeway at low tide it felt as though we were entering a different world. I cannot add to the superlatives in all the other reviews. The peace and isolation so close to the real world is amazing. I love Hamford Water, with the birds, the seals and wonderful land/seascapes (the Essex coast line cannot make up its mind whether to be land or sea!) and this Island is slap-bang in the middle of it. If you love wildlife, and especially birds, and can appreciate an escape from the modern world with peace, and a place where the grandchildren can just play on a haystack for an hour, you simply must visit. All this, and as others have said, hosts Vicky and Joe to make it perfect - and with puppies! Robin -

Island cottage was perfect, such a peaceful spot. We loved spending family time together playing games, relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet and the wildlife. It was so nice not having anywhere to be and the causeway was not a problem at all. There were lots of lovely walks, canoes were great fun and was amazing to have a whole beach to ourselves! We loved searching for feathers from the rheas and the peacocks. Vicky was the best host so kind, so lovely to our girls and we knew she would always there if we needed her for anything. The goodies on arrival were gratefully received too so thanks so much for those. We loved staying on Horsey Island and hope to stay again in the near future.

Driving across the causeway at low tide to reach our holiday cottage on Horsey Island, being level with the exposed sea bed and the wildlife was spectacular. The Island itself went far beyond our expectations, beautiful surroundings, so tranquil and peaceful. We were met at the edge of the causeway by our hosts Joe and Vicky, what an extrordinary couple !!! so welcoming and friendly, we felt so at home it was almost like we had known them for years. The cottage is imacculate, comfortable, warm and cosy, has everything we could possibly need and more. Although Joe and Vicky have an extremely busy lifestyle running their farm, they still found time to make us feel welcome. As beautiful, peaceful and tranquil as Horsey Island is, it would be nothing without you Joe and Vicky. Thank you. Neil and Jen.

Stayed with my grown up family (2 sons, daughter and daughter in law) for long weekend. I was aware of Horsey Island having read Arthur Ransome's Secret Water as a child and seen TV programme on Hamford Water but nothing prepared me for how beautiful and unspoilt it was. Journey across the Wade might appear intimidating but helped by sound advice before we arrived. Cottage was ideal for us- clean, well equipped and within its own fenced area. Mobile signal good enough to allow a little bit of home working. Vicky and Joe were outstanding hosts and made us feel very welcome, Joe very kindly picking my daughter up by boat when she arrived later than us by train, and helping our friends who visited by boat where to anchor. They were always willing to help and show off their island including answering the same questions they have no doubt been asked thousands of times before. We enjoyed the use of the kayaks, but probably the best experience were the walks around the island, the peace and the ubiquitous wildlife and farm animals especially the rhea. None of us wanted to leave although when we did we all felt incredibly rested. Thank you Joe and Vicky- we would like to come back
