About the neighbourhood
The island of Kolocep is situated near the city of Dubrovnik with an area of 2.44 square kilometres (0.94 square miles). It is part of the Elaphiti Islands (Croatian: Elafitski otoci or Elafiti), a small archipelago consisting of several islands stretching northwest of Dubrovnik. The island's flora includes tall pine and olive groves. Kolocep has more than 250 sunny days a year. Its climate is of a moderate Mediterranean type. The sea moderates the air temperature considerably keeping the average monthly daytime highs above 10 °C (50 °F) in winter and below 27 °C (81 °F) in summer. Kolocep is the closest island to Dubrovnik, located 5 kilometres (3 miles) from the Dubrovnik harbour of Gruz and is locally known as Kalamota. The population of the island is 150. It can be reached by regular ferry service 'Jadrolinija' –'Postira' that connects the Elaphiti Islands four times throughout the day. It is a 35 minute boat ride from one port to the other (Dubrovnik–Kolocep) by ferry. There are two villages on the island called Gornje Celo and Donje Celo. Both are situated in their respective coves with a 3 kilometre (1.9 miles) path in between. Kolocep is car free and ideal for taking relaxing walks along its signposted winding routes. Clear waters surrounding the island range from deep blue to turquoise aqua. The coastline has a number of hidden coves: one of them, locally known as the Blue Cave, can be accessed by swimming from the south side of the island. It can also be reached by private taxi boat. Archaeological remnants of ancient European conquerors have been found on the island: from the ancient times of Greece and Rome to the Napoleonic times. The island has seven pre-Romanesque churches dating back to the times of Croatian kings, from the 9th to the 11th century. In the times of the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik), Kolocep was an important shipbuilding site.
How to get there
Dubrovnik has an international airport of its own. It is located approximately 20 km from Dubrovnik city centre, near Cilipi. Buses connect the airport and neighbouring cities (Split, Mostar, Sarajevo, Kotor) with the main bus station in port of Gruz. However, Dubrovnik, unlike Croatia's other major centres, is not accessible by rail (the nearest train station is in Split). The A1 motorway, in use between Zagreb and Ploce, is planned to be extended all the way to Dubrovnik. From the airport in Dubrovnik you can take the airport shuttle bus. It costs 35 Kn. A taxi to Dubrovnik town costs about 300 kn. It takes about half an hour depending on traffic. The bus stops at the Pile gate by the Old City. If you are heading for the islands, stay on the bus and get off at the ferry pier in Gruž. The bus journey ends some 500 metres further down the road at the main bus station Gruz. The island of Kolocep can be reached by regular 'Jadrolinija' ferry service by a ship named 'Postira'. The journey takes about 35 minutes. The ship sails four times a day , except on Sundays and holidays when she sails tvice per day (in July and August four times a day throughout the week). Also, a taxi boat is available. Tickets to the island Kolocep can be bought at the 'Jadrolinja' office, just opposite the Pier. Kolocep is car free. In case you are arriving by car, you can leave your car in Dubrovnik port parking (24 hours safe parking with price circa eight euro per day).
