Oehlandt and his wife Wenke Oehlandt transformed their Tamboerskloof home, seizing its prime location and placing the panoramic views at centre stage. Located in the foothills of Signal Hill, the home features protected views of Lion’s Head, Table Mountain and Devils Peak, not to mention the Harbour and West Coast. ‘The initial architect was Georg van Gass,’ shares Patrick, ‘But we did the re-design ourselves.’ Patrick and Wenke extended themselves as the planners, interior designers and builders, creating as a team a truly personal and unmatched home. ‘The working relationship between us was sometimes challenging, but never boring,’ he laughs. La Maison, their new interior design firm, is a proud continuation of this passion for beautiful design. The couple moved to Cape Town from Germany 10 years ago and brought with them their European taste and German efficiency. ‘We did the entire renovation – from breaking down the walls, new flooring, new ceilings, skimming, tiling, bathrooms (including new sanitaryware and plumbing), kitchen and electricals plus carpentry in less than seven weeks,’ he says. ‘It took hard work and fine attention to detail.’ The uncluttered, yet approachable living space is, apart from the mountain and city views, the home’s focal feature. ‘It’s clean, open and structured, all while taking full advantage of the position and direct access to the mountain.’ The couple took a less-is-more approach to every detail: minimalist furniture from LIM, Weylandts and Haldane Martin serve the Scandi-chic space. Combining glass, wood and black surfaces together with green accents, it’s a modern mix of texture and style. The kitchen, another of the home’s standout features, was designed by Wenke and Patrick and built in collaboration with Nico Herholdt of Dreamscape. It hosts an ultra-modern, monochrome work area, with a slick kitchen island that takes up a stunning 7m. Wenke, a wine and restaurant connoisseur herself, takes great delight in the space. ‘The beauty of nature, food and wine scene in Cape Town inspires us, and we are so happy to have settled in Tamboerskloof, where nature and design take pride of place.’
