A self-catering holiday at The Safe House offers you clean, comfortable and suitably appointed accommodation at a private beach front location* with uninterrupted sea views, complete peace and tranquility, stunning skyscapes and nature all around you. It offers guests a solitude that is becoming increasingly harder to find without significant travel cost and effort, only 2 hours from Central London. A stroll along the deserted beach, watching a stunning sunset, listening to the birds settling in for the night can give you the feeling that you are the only people on the planet. It is quite simply wonderful, if you appreciate the finer things in life. A real tonic for the mind, body and soul! Accommodation The Safe House is a semi detached timber framed building built on concrete piers, on Ray Creek beach at Lee Over Sands. The accommodation includes an entrance hall, 2 bedrooms, bathroom, south facing open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area, a utility room and a large L-shaped South & West facing deck to the back and side of the chalet to take full advantage of this stunning location. It will comfortably sleep a family of four but, has a z-bed for a child, a travel cot & high chair for a baby, if required. History The property was built on the highest point on Beach Road, Lee-Over-Sands, level with the top of the sea wall, by a past honorary coast guard. It was originally built as a shelter for sailors cast ashore on local beaches by shallows, difficult tides and weather conditions, who had no idea where they had come ashore due to its remoteness. It became known locally as The Safe House. Location The Safe House is situated in a unique location, that will appeal to people who love being by the sea, enjoy natural surroundings or are simply seeking solitude and tranquility, away from the madding crowd. It is situated on the Essex sunshine coast which is the driest place in the UK with some of the highest hours of sunshine annually. The property is next to the Essex Wildlife Trust (EWT) reserve on Colne Point which, has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and home to many species of birds both resident and migratory. The reserve has a well-established colony of Little Egrets and often attracts Arctic Terns and other uncommon migrating species. Access to the beaches and the wildlife reserve is restricted to members of the EWT and residents both permanent and temporary (so our guests are welcome). It could be described as an exclusive experience. The beaches are a mix of sand banks and shingle. Beach-combers find plenty to interest them, fisherman occasionally cast from the shore and bird watchers marvel at the rich diversity of bird life. Rush hour here occurs twice a day when the tide ebbs and flows! Activities Local activities include, but are not restricted to: Beach-combing, Bird Watching, Canoeing / Kayaking, Crabbing, Cycling, Sea Fishing, Swimming, Walking & Wind Surfing Come & imbibe! * Access to the property can be temporarily restricted for a couple of hours either side of the very highest tides, during the new & full moon lunar cycles. We are delighted you had such wonderful weather during your stay and enjoyed the glorious location and natural environment. When it sparkles out there it is second to very few locations, maybe a private Caribbean Island or The Maldives ... Thanks for leaving your feedback...More

About the neighbourhood
Lee Over Sands is a remote small hamlet comprising two private roads, Wall Street & Beach Road. The houses in Wall Street are protected by a sea wall and surrounded to the North & East by arable farmland for a mile or so in each direction. The majority of the properties on Beach Road are built outside the defenses that the sea wall offers, on a gravel beach facing Ray Creek and mouth of the Thames Estuary. Ray Creek is a tidal creek that separates Beach Road from the beach at Colne Point. To the East of Beach Road is the Colne Point Nature reserve operated by the Essex Wildlife Trust that is a 600 + acre reserve. It is largely salt-marsh and shingle beach and home to many estuarine birds including Egrets, Greenshank, Oystercatchers, Plover & Terns. It is also host to many migrating birds...
