Swallow Cottage is located in the peaceful and picturesque grounds of Itteringham Mill, 2 minutes from The Walpole Arms (currently closed) a much awarded gastro-pub and 6 minutes from possibly the oldest continuously operated village shop in the country (now run as a community shop). Because of our rural location there is no mobile phone coverage at the cottage (best signal is 1/2 mile up the road). Broadband speed recently improved to 40Mbit/s. Only 10 miles from the coast (Sheringham) and about 12 miles from the Broads (Wroxham) it is conveniently close to both but far enough away to avoid the crowds. Our guests come here to enjoy the peace and quiet and the abundant wildlife. We have seen nearly 60 species of birds in the garden, including kingfishers and little egrets. The river is a magnet for wildlife and it is always a great buzz to see a visiting otter. If you're planning on visiting with young children please remember the river is unfenced. North Norfolk is a real gem offering a fantastic variety of things to do and places to visit. Blickling Hall is a pleasant walk away. There is a range of other stately homes within a short drive. Seal watching trips are offered at the coast. Sheringham is a pleasant seaside town with the usual seaside attractions and Cromer with its pier is about 12 miles away. Nearest town Aylsham with its pleasant Georgian market square offers several small supermarkets as well as a range of traditional butchers, artisan bread shops, market stalls a couple of days a week and a farmer's market monthly. The town also has a miniature railway providing trips to Wroxham and the attractions of the Broads. A fun thing to do on a Monday is to visit Keys general auction sales. Keys also host two-day antique auctions most months. There are a good number of great pubs with great food nearby. There are plenty of footpaths nearby. For serious shoppers Holt has a range of classy art galleries, boutiques and antique shops, while Norwich, with its castle, museums, pubs, galleries, churches and shops is about a 30 minute drive away. Fishing is possible on the river subject to licence, but is mostly trout, and made difficult by silt, aquatic vegetation and overhanging trees.

Picturesque, Charming and Comfortable Cottage - Great for exploring Norfolk
This was our third time staying at Swallow Cottage. We always have a wonderful time. It is a cosy, clean and comfortable cottage nestled next to a picturesque mill and river. It's also a perfect base for exploring the beautiful Norfolk countryside and coastline. Our 11 year old son particularly likes catching crayfish in the river by the mill, he often disappears for hours! Peter and Liz are fantastic hosts who are very welcoming and always there if you need them but otherwise will leave you in peace to relax and enjoy your holiday. Definitely worth a visit! Also the wifi is really good! Which helps when you are planning your trips out each day :)

Lovely cottage in an Idyllic Location
This was our second stay at Swallow Cottage. The location is idyllic and the cottage is clean, comfortable and has everything you need as the perfect base to explore the beautiful Norfolk landscape. Peter & Liz are friendly and approachable hosts who are happy to help and advise if and when you need it. Hopefully we will get back again one day.

A very special little corner of North Norfolk....
Narrow lanes at the edge of a small village and opposite a welcoming local pub lead you to a mill side location of peace and tranquility. Soft white towels and crisp clean sheets envelop you as you begin to unwind and the running water and birdsong outside carry you away to sleep soundly. This was our first Norfolk trip staying away from the coast and it proved to be a great choice with easy access to walks, cycle routes and plenty to see on your doorstep, while Cromer is just 20 mins up the road. Peter and Lis were perfect hosts, welcoming and close by if needed, but not at all intrusive. we could not improve it and will look to return! Thank you.

YOU WILL GO BACK AGAIN.........!
This holiday cottage is a must for anyone wanting to visit north Norfolk! It was very very clean, homely and with everything you needed for a break, except the internet which was bliss......! Peter and Liz are fantastic hosts, there if you need them but doing their own daily jobs so never intrusive or in your way! However the most exceptional aspect of this place are the gardens and beautiful mill pond where we fed small brown trout and Rudd, plus swans and the resident moorhen family. It is just so calm quiet and peaceful so you really can “get away from it all” although Cromer and the coast are only a 25 minute drive away down some lovely country roads. We cannot recommend this property highly enough so visit it once and you will definitely want to go again.......!!!!!!

Relax, unwind and enjoy the stay
Peter and Liz have a truly beautiful corner of the earth. They made us feel welcome but were unobtrusive. Swallow cottage is part of a barn conversion next the owner’s house converted from the original mill. The cottage was cosy and well equipped. The grounds are stunning consisting of a stream, weir, weeping willows, sculptures, flowers and wildlife. During your stay keep your eyes peeled for deer, kingfisher, hares, rabbits, pheasant, doves and squirrels to name a few. If you are lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of a blind otter, just be careful on the drive in! The cottage is ideally placed within walking distance to a friendly pub, that served amazing meals, and Itteringham village with its famous old shop. Cromer, Sheringham and Norwich were only a short drive away. Perfect if you want to get away from it all as there is no mobile phone reception at the cottage and the village. We truly hope to have the opportunity to stay again!

Lovely place for a short break
It is a beautiful quiet place with little more than the water flowing through the mill and the sound of birds to hear. It is well placed for visits to the Broads, Blickling Hall, Mannington Gardens and lots of heritage railways. The cottage was well equipped, clean, comfortable and interestingly laid out. I was allowed to do some fly fishing from the garden which was very enjoyable but totally unsuccessful . Peter very kindly sent on a battery charger we left behind on our departure. We would very happily go there again.

Quiet, relaxing and perfect location for exploring north Norfolk
I've just returned from a fantastic week here exploring north Norfolk with my two children. This cottage is set in the beautiful grounds of a lovely old watermill, where you can completely get away from everyday life. The cottage was spotless and is very well equipped with a washing machine and dishwasher, and has two lovely bedrooms which are both en suite, and a private garden for this cottage with an outside table and chairs. The owners have thought of everything - there was a great welcome pack full of information on the local area and places to visit, and a pint of milk in the fridge on arrival with some tea and coffee, and a delicious Norfolk fruit cake! There were even night lights in both rooms and some books and a board game. There is wifi but we had no phone signal, which we were made aware of before our stay, and this actually enhanced our 'get away from it all' break! The garden and river were beautiful, and we spotted so much wildlife including an owl on our first night, as well as a swan, a heron and several crayfish in the river. The owners are very helpful but not intrusive. I only saw/spoke to Lis, but she was great from the moment of booking and sending emails with advice for our stay. She recommended some great places to take my sons, and this was the perfect base for exploring north Norfolk. I would recommend a trip to see the seals at Blakeney Point and Sandringham which were our favourites. The Walpole Arms pub is at the end of the driveway which serves fantastic food. We only visited it a couple of times, but definitely worth it. We will definitely be returning. Thank you for a wonderful week!

Excellent roomy cottage
The location of and the accommodation in the cottage were what we wanted i.e. a 2-bedroom cottage in a rural position near Aylsham and the coast. We liked the fact that all the rooms were a really good size - all too often in holiday cottages the rooms are small and pokey. Each bedroom had its own bathroom. The cottage was clean and tidy and well equipped, although we could have done with a few more plates and bowls. The cottage is close to a lovely old watermill which has a beautiful garden, so our surroundings were a joy to wake up to. The owner was friendly.

A superb short break in a lovely converted barn set in the beautiful tranquil grounds of the Mill at Itteringham
Attending a family gathering in Weybourne we chose Swallow Cottage just 10 miles or so inland as somewhere we could relax away from the hussle and bussle of the coastal resort . We were not disappointed. The cottage, which sits in the lovely extensive 4+acres grounds of the Mill, was spacious, spotless, comfortably furnished with a well laid out kitchen/dining area and in fact provided us with everything we needed. Having travelled for 2 days to get to Norfolk it became a home from home for the next 4 days. A word must be said about the owners Liz and Peter who live in the Mill. A lovely couple who we instantly warmed to and who welcomed us to their idyllic environment. We spent most of our time at the cottage/gardens and in the surrounding area eating out at the local pub where the food and ambiance was excellent. All in all a secret jewel in Norfolk and have already recommended to family and friends

About the neighbourhood
North Norfolk is a hidden gem, and our part of it is particularly attractive, with gently rolling hills, fields, woodland and unspoilt coast, some of which is designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The woods around us are full of bluebells early in the year, and May is the rhododendron season with Sheringham Park particularly famous for its display. The River Bure, which flows through our grounds is a spring-fed chalk stream bordered with willow, ash and alder and supporting stands of natural watercress. Otters have become a more common sight over the last few years. There are many fine churches and stately homes within a short drive as well as some more unusual places to visit such as the Amazonia Zoo just outside Cromer. Our area is crossed by many public footpaths allowing you to penetrate deep into the countryside away from any roads. It is primarily an agricultural area so we are surrounded by fields. Our local village of Itteringham probably has less than 100 inhabitants yet supports a thriving community shop, on a site which has been operating as a local shop for about 350 years! Blickling Hall, ancestral home of the Boleyn family and one of the National Trust's flagship properties is a short drive (or a pleasant walk) away. The view of the Hall at night time, floodlit and fronted by its spectacular lawn and ancient yew hedges is most impressive - but perhaps my favourite view is of the back of the hall, viewed from across its expansive lake and framed by the many stately trees in its wonderful garden.

How to get there
From London: take M11 then A11 (there are currently road works outside Thetford to add an additional carriageway to the only part of the A11 that had not been dual-carriageway). Nearing Norwich take the outer ring road following signs to Airport and Cromer A140. Try to avoid the ring road at rush hour. Come off the ring road at signs for Cromer and Airport. Pass the airport and continue on A140 to Aylsham. Leave A140 to drive through Aylsham, passing through the centre of the town and continuing on the Blickling Road. Look out for Blickling Hall on your right. Two miles on from Blickling Hall take right turn, signed Itteringham (you may also see a sign for the Village Shop and the Walpole Arms). Just before the village at a junction with the Walpole Arms on your right, cross the junction and take the left hand of two parallel drives to approach Itteringham Mill. (If you have a satnav it may take you via the A47 and Ringland. This is potentially quicker but does take you through some very windy and narrow lanes and the route is too complicated to explain here). From the West: head to Kings Lyn and follow signs A148 Cromer around Kings Lyn. Pass Fakenham and just past Thursford look out for junction with B1354 on right signed Briston and Melton Constable. Take this road and follow to T junction with B1149 (Holt Road) at Saxthorpe. Turn right at the junction follow the road around to roundabout and take first exit (B1354) signed Itteringham. Continue on this road. Beware there is a partly hidden very sharp left-handed bend about 2.5kms on this road. Very shortly after this bend look for a small turning on the left (there will be a long, cream painted house ahead on a sharp right hand bend). Take the turning and follow the road around to a T junction. Turn left and follow road down to junction just before the village with Walpole Arms on your right. Cross this junction and take the left hand of two parallel drives to drive down to Itteringham Mill.
