A secret gem! This Grade II listed sailors loft is on one of the oldest streets in Brixham with a unique outdoor space, stunning harbour views and a complimentary parking permit. As you open the gate set into the old stone wall of one of the most characterful streets in Brixham, you step through into what feels like a secret garden and are immediately captivated by the outstanding views from the unique outdoor space. This wonderfully positioned cottage places you in the heart of the town with views of the inner harbour that stretch right round to the Breakwater and the colour washed cottages beyond. Stone steps lead you down to the entrance of this 2 bed property which is arranged over two levels. Having undergone a refurbishment both inside and outside in November 2019, High Hopes now offers all the modern comforts we know our guests love. The bay window of the open plan lounge and kitchen/diner draws you in with waterside views of the Golden Hind so close you can almost reach out and touch the boats. You will feel like you have your own box at the theatre as you look out and enjoy the sounds of Brixham Town Band playing under the Old Fish Market in summer evenings, smell the gunpowder as the pirates re-enact a skirmish on board the Golden Hind during Pirates weekend and stay warm whilst watching the beautiful fireworks at Lantern Lights and 'Luminations. When the fresh sea air and morning sun beckons, watch the goings on in 'Fishtown' from the garden which enjoys a feeling of seclusion. Brixham’s harbour and town centre is within very short walking distance and you will find the heritage site of Berry Head National Nature Reserve via the South West Coast Path, and ferry boats that take passengers the short journey across the bay to Torquay throughout the year. So park up the car and explore. For cosy days in you will find an HD TV complete with Freeview, BBC iPlayer and Netflix to keep all generations happy. There’s even a collection of books, games and jigsaws for those evenings that are about unwinding. After a day exploring the local delights and filling your lungs full of fresh sea air, the open plan lounge and kitchen/diner provides a great social space whether travelling as a family or with friends. A stay at High Hopes includes a complimentary parking permit for over 30 car parks across Torbay. Long and short stay car parks are both within short walking distance - a great perk for when you are out visiting the many local attractions. More

The stairs and the roof terrace in this property are dangerous. The stairs are listed as not suitable for people with mobility problems. Rubbish! The stairs are broken, uneven, narrow concrete. How emergency services access this I do not know. The roof terrace “children should be supervised”. There is only a very low wall edge and anyone could trip and fall about 12-15ft onto concrete below. The large internal window has no safety catch! The internal open plan stairs are lopsided and the floor slopes in the opposite direction. It is a very long walk from where you park your car down a lot of stairs to arrive at the property, especially when dragging luggage! It is not exactly newly renovated! We complained re stairs etc when we arrived, but without success. We stayed three days and said we would like a refund of the balance. We are lodging a claim for the balance with Saltwater as they have refused to refund and this was in August 2021. We were a party of four and I had a Moon boot on, but was fully mobile. The other three of the party and two visitors were not happy with the stairs, especially at night. Saltwater did offer a partial refund if I did not post a bad review, but I refused. There are several negative comments re these stairs on various sites. Trip Advisor did advise her to show proper pictures of the stairs and terrace and then people could decide for themselves, but so far she has not done this! I would advise anyone booking this to request pictures of the stairs from all angles and the terrace and the drop from the terrace!

Location was great but the property was a disappointment. I dont agree that the property is 'renovated'. The pictures are very impressive but the reality is a bit different, and a lot smaller. The bathroom felt tired and the window in the smaller 2 single bed room was rotten. The property is not suitable at all for families with small children due to the single glazed window in the bedroom and no childproof catch on it, single glazed low level window in the living room (which we felt was extremely dangerous should our daughter fall in to the window 3 floor up) and the steps between the garden and property that make the garden unusable and access quite dangerous. For a couple with no mobility issues it would be OK but as mentioned, I dont think it's suitable for small children or people with mobility issues (due to the awkward stair access which is not clear in any of the photos).

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and we are pleased to hear that you thought the location was great. As per the property description, High Hopes was renovated in November 2019 and further maintenace work was also completed over the lockdown periods. As explained when I called to check in with you during your stay, the Grade II listing of the property does mean that the windows are older in style. We do have frequent families that stay with us, with the views of the Golden Hind and the harbour being a huge hit with young families, but I am sorry to hear that you did not feel it was suitable for your small children. We do aim to make it very clear on the listing about the access, with the listing stating "Please be aware there are steep steps to access the property and therefore High Hopes is not suitable for those with mobility issues. The terrace is at a higher level than the accommodation and children should not be left unsupervised on the terrace or steps." We know that this unique harbourside location is not for everyone, we appreciate your comments and hope to welcome you back to South Devon in the future.
