Holiday Rental House
The Old House (Ty Hen) is unique - described by one guest as the most unusual place they had ever stayed in. Dating back to at least 1834, the cottage is excellently situated in the Rhiwbryfdir area of Blaenau Ffestiniog in a very quiet road. Turn right out of the front door and you are within a ten minute walk of the town centre with all the shops and eateries and the Ffestiniog Railway. Also within ten minutes walk are the Llechwedd Slate Caverns with the Victorian Mine Tour and the Quarry Explorer. This is also the home of the Zip World complex with Zip World Titan, Bounce Below and Zip World Caverns. The Antur Stiniog Centre with its excellent mountain bike trails can be found here as well. Turn left out of the front door, across the railway track and you are out onto a path leading straight into the mountains. The cottage, itself, is one of the most original left in Blaenau Ffestiniog and because of this it is important in the heritage of the locality, being mentioned twice on the CADW (Welsh Heritage) website, due to its original features and uniqueness. Most of the town succumbed to the regeneration scheme but The Old House still retains its pretty sash windows and original old Welsh slate roof. Enter the cottage through the lovely old wood door into the lounge/diner, an odd shaped room complete with a rare Welsh Oven which used to provide all the heat and cooking facilities in the cottage. Under the carpet the original slate floor still exists - worn unevenly by the footsteps of the many generations who lived there. There is is a seating and dining area for four and two 2-seater sofas. There is a TV/DVD with a small library of adult and child DVDs. Free WiFi is available and there is plenty of literature on local activities. The kitchen is well equipped with an electric oven, microwave, slow cooker, toasted sandwich maker, fridge with freezer compartment and a washer/dryer. Climb the steep stairs and turn left, down a step, into the large pretty twin bedroom complete with its own wash basin and a velux window with views of the mountains and stunning night sky. On the right is is the quirky double bedroom with two pretty, low-level windows. There is a double bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers with a mirror. The bathroom, unfortunately, has no shower due to the sloping ceiling but does have a hand held shower/mixer tap. Central heating has now been installed and there is unlimited hot water. The whole property does have sloping ceilings in some rooms, low doorways and steep stairs which all add to its unique charm but may make it unsuitable for the elderly, very young and very tall. Saying that we have had a 92 year old and toddlers staying there! Parking is in a public lay by just 5 yards past the cottage or if required there is private parking in an enclosed area about 25 yards past the cottage. Towels, bed linen, gas and electricity are all included in the price Blaenau Ffestiniog has a good selection of supermarkets open until late at night and to eat out there are several cafes, an excellent Indian Restaurant, a good Chinese takeaway and a fish and chip shop. It even has it's own little cinema which opened recently. The town is ideally located for visiting places of local interest with the Italiniate village of Portmeirion and the fabulous Black Rock Sands a short drive away. There are plenty of castles and National Trust properties to explore - guides to which are to be found in the cottage. Snowdon and the charming town of Betws y Coed are not far away. The cottage is a great base for exploring the area. For more ideas of attractions and places to eat visit Facebook and search for The Old House - Welsh Holiday Cottage. Allergies - please note, the cottage is occasionally used by dogs. Also, there are feather duvets and pillows. Any start date and any number of days may be available. Please enquire. More

Interaction with guests
The keys are kept in a key safe by the front door and I will supply you with the code shortly before your arrival. My caretaker lives next door to the cottage and I am always happy for you to ring me if you have a problem or you want some suggestions for places to visit or things to do. Plenty of local information in the cottage on various walks, national trust properties etc

Quirky but comfortable cottage. Clean and well equipped. The owner is lovely to deal with. Some low doors are a minor inconvenience as are the steep stairs.

About the neighbourhood
The cottage is in the quiet residential area of Rhiwbryfdir with walks straight from the doorstep into the mountains. As well as being peaceful it has the added advantage of being only ten minutes walk from everything Blaenau has to offer. In one direction you have the Zip World/ Llechwedd Slate Mines complex with Bounce Below, Zip World Titan, The Slate Mines and Quarry Explorer all on your doorstep. Blaenau has an excellent Indian restaurant (Red Chillies) and CellB which not only serves superb food but also has a little cinema and occasional other entertainment.
